Oreocereus trollii – Old Man of the Andes Cactus
Oreocereus trollii, commonly known as Old Man of the Andes Cactus, is a fascinating columnar cactus admired for its soft white hair-like covering and distinctive upright growth habit. Native to high elevations in the Andes Mountains, its woolly appearance helps protect the plant from intense sun and harsh environmental conditions.
Despite its soft appearance, hidden spines emerge beneath the fuzzy coating. Brighter light and stronger sun exposure help maintain compact growth and can intensify spine development over time, creating an even more dramatic appearance as the plant matures.
Light
Thrives in bright indirect to direct indoor light. A sunny south-facing window is ideal.
Soil
Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, coarse sand, or perlite.
Water
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly, especially during cooler months.
Temperature & Humidity
Prefers temperatures between 18–29°C and low humidity with good airflow.
Fertilizer
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Potting & Repotting
Repot only when rootbound using containers with excellent drainage.
